This unit is like opening a window for fresh air and keeping up to 90% of the heat or cooling that I have paid for. Indoor air quality is typically a lot worse than outdoor air quality. I don’t get a buildup of noxious fumes from building materials. The air has a fresher smell to it also.

There is a way you can compost your kitchen and garden waste, including weeds, that requires almost no work on your part and enrich your soil in as little as one month. Your compost is completely invisible, completely undetectable by smell, and will fit in just about anywhere in your garden. And it requires no turning whatsoever!

The only time I don’t trench compost is when I can’t dig the soil!

You dig a trench (it doesn’t matter what shape your hole is) approximately twelve to fourteen inches deep, add roughly four to six inches of compostable materials, such as kitchen scraps , spent garden plants, prunings, thinnings, and weeds, and bury it with the soil you dug out of the trench.

Anything that I can’t feed my chickens goes into the trench.

I also compost bones, spoiled meat, and fat from the kitchen. I will mix these materials with wood-chips. The wood-chips provide a good home for aerobic bacteria which will chew up bones, meat, and fat in record time.

The next step is…..well, there is no next step. Just wait for your soil to be enriched!

Jøtul Combi-fire #4 wood stove. It was fashioned after the heads found on Easter Island as a nod to Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl, so the story goes.

It is a cast iron combination stove and free-standing fireplace. The door opens and slides underneath the stove for use as a fireplace. With my Jotul and my Solar Hot Air Panels I totally heat my house.

I turned off my circuit breakers to the base board electric panels which were tremendous energy hogs and a big sink-hole for my checking account.

When you are trying to be earth friendly you have to be willing to change your lifestyle somewhat. We just get used to indoor temperature swings warm during the day to cooling off at night.

I get my firewood from a tree trimming service. For the most part they take down dead trees or remove trees from power lines and properties where they pose a problem.

It is the end of February and they are singing a sweet duet! They have a small photo-voltaic panel that powers the fan, so no outside energy is needed. As long as I have the sun shining I can get heat.

These units are really good in the transitional seasons of Spring and Fall. Some days the temperature will get up to 80 degrees in the house just from these panels

I purposely set my thermostat to 80 degrees as the upper limit. When you are trying to be earth friendly you have to be willing to change your lifestyle somewhat. We just get used to indoor temperature swings that mimic the outdoor earth cycles.

PopPop’s French Onion Soup

Preparation time: It takes a while and be prepared to cry!.

Ingredients:

10 lbs. yellow onions (the stronger the better)

3 lbs. 48 oz. beef broth (no MSG 100% fat free)

2 cups red wine (merlot)

2 sticks butter (unsalted)

Old Bay seasoning to taste

Black pepper to taste

2 tsp granulated garlic or garlic powder

2 Cans (14.5 oz.) chicken broth (no MSG 100% fat free)

½ cup Worcestershire sauce

Directions:

  1. Make a coarse dice of the onions; melt butter in heavy cast iron skillet, sauté onions, and turn several times until onions are caramelized to a nice brown color. After the first turning shake Old Bay seasoning and black pepper onto onions in an even layer that just covers the onions. After the onions are finished empty into a large pot (at least 8 qt.), deglaze the skillet with enough chicken stock to clean the bottom, and empty the skillet into the pot a second time.
  2. Repeat step one until all onions are sautéed.
  3. Add beef broth, red wine, leftover butter, granulated garlic, leftover chicken broth, and the Worcestershire sauce to the onions in the 8 qt. pot. Bring to a slow boil, stir occasionally, and cook for a half hour uncovered to drive off the alcohol from the soup.
  4. Place a slice (or half slice determined by the size of the bowl) of seeded rye bread in the bottom of the bowl, place a slice of Swiss cheese or Gruyere cheese on top of the rye, spoon soup on top of the cheese until bowl is ¾ full, add another slice of cheese, and top off with a little more soup until cheese is covered.
  5. ENJOY

PopPop’s Apple Pie

This is a deep-dish pie. Find the deepest pie pan you can find, I like glass.

3 lbs Braeburn & Granny Smith apples (peeled and sliced thinly)

½ cup flour

½ cup turbinado sugar

½  tsp cinnamon

½ tsp nutmeg

½ lemon (juiced)

Mix all ingredients in a mixing bowl and let sit for about an hour.

Roll out pastry as thin as possible. One shell will do both crust and lattice. Put pie crust in pie pan. Cut excess crust flush with top of pie pan.

Add apple mixture carefully trying to compact gently.

Bake at 450 deg. F. for 15 minutes to set crust.

Then bake at 300 deg. F. until pie filling is bubbling.

Add Pastry Lattice (favorite) or Crumb Topping (below) and bake at 300 deg. F. for 15 more minutes.

Cut pastry in thin strips and apply to top of pie. Sprinkle coarse turbinado sugar thinly over top.

Crumb Topping

½ cup rolled oats

½ cup flour

¼ cup turbinado sugar

¼  cup softened butter

¼ tsp cinnamon

¼ tsp nutmeg

Combine all dry ingredients and mix thoroughly.

Then cut-in softened butter until mixture is crumbly.

PopPop’s Blueberry Pie

The Supreme Court ruling allowing corporate political cash to support or oppose candidates for President and Congress further marginalizes the influence of regular citizens.

I ask:

  1. Does it appear to you that all “persons” get equal treatment under the law?

2. How do Corporate “persons” that are to be regulated by Congress get to influence the election of the people’s representatives in Congress?

3. When Corporate “persons” declare themselves as Multi-National are they really American citizens anymore?

4. Do corporations, companies, associations, firms, partnerships, societies, and joint stock companies have “personhood” endowed by their Creator?

The 2002 campaign finance law at issue was named after Senator John McCain, the unsuccessful Republican presidential nominee in 2008, and Democratic Senator Russell Feingold.

The justices overturned Supreme Court precedents from 2003 and 1990 that upheld federal and state limits on independent expenditures by corporate treasuries to support or oppose candidates.

More than a century ago, President Teddy Roosevelt saw what today’s court is blind to — that unleashing corporations to drench our political campaigns in special interest money will drown out the voice of regular citizens.

Roosevelt banned corporate political spending by signing the Tillman Act in 1907. Four decades later, Congress extended the same ban to unions. Supreme courts have affirmed these limits as legitimate several times since.

In a 5-4 decision this supposedly conservative court swept all that away. So now, instead of soliciting their employees or members for voluntary donations to political action committees, unions and corporations can tap their general funds for political causes, allowing them to spend much more.

The laws of the United States hold that a legal entity (like a corporation or non-profit organization) shall be treated under the law as a person except when otherwise noted. This rule of construction is specified in 1 U.S.C. §1, which states: In determining the meaning of any Act of Congress, unless the context indicates otherwise– the words “person” and “whoever” include corporations, companies, associations, firms, partnerships, societies, and joint stock companies, as well as individuals;

I find it demeaning to me as a human being to be placed in the same category with corporations, companies, associations, firms, partnerships, societies, and joint stock companies.

It appears to me that Congress has created “super persons” in the form of corporations, companies, associations, firms, partnerships, societies, and joint stock companies endowed with “super rights”.

What do Corporate “persons” get from your local, state, and federal that regular citizens don’t:

  1. Free or reduced-price land
  2. Infrastructure assistance
  3. Tax-increment financing
  4. Property tax breaks
  5. State corporate income tax credits
  6. Sales tax rebates
  7. Enterprise-zone (and other zone) status
  8. Financial maneuvering between subsidiaries to avoid State and Federal income taxes
  9. Transfer pricing, involves corporations’ charging their overseas subsidiaries lower prices for goods and services, a common move that lowers a corporation’s tax bill

Two out of every three United States Corporations (Corporate “persons”) paid no federal income taxes from 1998 through 2005, according to a report by the Government Accountability Office, the investigative arm of Congress.

I ask again:

  1. Does it appear to you that all “persons” get equal treatment under the law?

2. How do Corporate “persons” that are to be regulated by Congress get to influence the election of the people’s representatives in Congress?
