How Can I Keep From Singing

“How Can I Keep From Singing?” (also known by its incipit “My Life Flows On in Endless Song”) is an American folksong originally composed as a Christian hymn by American Baptist minister Robert Wadsworth Lowry. The song is frequently, though erroneously, cited as a traditional Quaker or Shaker hymn. The original composition has now entered into the public domain, and appears in several hymnals and song collections, both in its original form and with a revised text that omits most of the explicitly Christian content and adds a verse about solidarity in the face of oppression.

Leave it to the Irish to make a good inspiring song from it.

Celtic Woman “How Can I Keep From Singing”

Lyrics

My life goes on in endless song
Above earth’s lamentations
I hear the trumpets sounding strong
That hails a new creation

Through all the tumult and the strife
I hear it’s music ringing
It ever echoes in my life
How can I keep from singing?

And though the shadows gather round
The endless song it giveth
My strength within and joy unbound
The world of truth it liveth

Though dark the night and long the road
I hear the music ringing
And with such power and grace bestowed
How can I keep from singing?

No storm can shake my inmost calm
While to this rock I’m clinging
How can I ever come to harm?
How can I keep from singing?

Then sings my soul with love profound
A fountain ever springing
Deep from the earth, how sweet the sound
How can I keep from singing?

How Can I Keep From Singing
The song received new prominence in 1991 when Irish musician Enya released a recording of the hymn on her album Shepherd Moons. Enya’s version follows Pete Seeger’s replacement of some more overtly Christian lines, for example: “What tho’ my joys and comforts die? The Lord my Saviour liveth” became “What tho’ the tempest ’round me roars, I hear the truth it liveth.”

How Can I Keep From Singing Enya – Eithne Pádraigín Ní Bhraonáin

Lyrics

My life goes on in endless song
Above earth´s lamentations,
I hear the real, though far-off hymn
That hails a new creation.

Through all the tumult and the strife
I hear its music ringing,
It sounds an echo in my soul.
How can I keep from singing?

While though the tempest loudly roars,
I hear the truth, it liveth.
And though the darkness ’round me close,
Songs in the night it giveth.

No storm can shake my inmost calm,
While to that rock I´m clinging.
Since love is lord of heaven and earth
How can I keep from singing?

When tyrants tremble in their fear
And hear their death knell ringing,
When friends rejoice both far and near
How can I keep from singing?

In prison cell and dungeon vile
Our thoughts to them are winging,
When friends by shame are undefiled
How can I keep from singing?

“You Raise Me Up” is a song originally composed by the Norwegian-Irish duo Secret Garden. The music was written by Secret Garden’s Rolf Løvland, and the lyrics by Brendan Graham.

The song was originally composed as an instrumental piece and titled “Silent Story”. Løvland later approached Irish novelist and songwriter Brendan Graham to write the lyrics to his melody, after reading Graham’s novels.

The song was made by and for Løvland himself and performed for the very first time at the funeral of Løvland’s mother.

You Raise Me Up

When I am down and, oh my soul, so weary;
When troubles come and my heart burdened be;
Then, I am still and wait here in the silence
Until you come and sit awhile with me

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up’ To more than I can be

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up’ To more than I can be

There is no life ‘ no life without its hunger;
Each restless heart beats so imperfectly;
But when you come and I am filled with wonder
Sometimes, I think I glimpse eternity

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up’ To more than I can be

You raise me up’ To more than I can be

Ghost In The Machinery

Spirit is matter seen in a stronger light.— L. P. Jacks

“A master in the art of living draws no sharp distinction between work and play.” — L. P. Jacks

“The mechanical mind has a passion for control – of everything except itself. Beyond the control it has won over the forces of nature it would now win control over the forces of society of stating the problem and producing the solution, with social machinery to correspond.” — L. P. Jacks

I don’t like the word “Spirit” because it has become an ambiguous and obscure religious concept. It is something that has been defined as being outside of myself. I pray to my ‘belief of God’ to give me a little more “Spirit”. I do this because I feel currently lacking in “Spirit”.

My definition of “Spirit” for this essay is “I am an essence from the Supreme One which inhabits a physical body at the center of my being”(Ghost In The Machinery) . The Supreme One has already given me access to Complete Collective Consciousness. There is no more that he/she can give to me. So where does this feeling of lack and limitation come from? This is what I call SIN Self-Induced-Nonsense.

My body and mind is like a rheostat.

A rheostat is a variable resistor which is used to control current. They are able to vary the resistance in a circuit without interruption. In practical terms I know this as a light dimmer switch.

I love the comparison of “Spirit” to electricity. My body/mind is like a rheostat for the “Spirit”. When a rheostat is turned down it does not change the full potential of current that is available; it only limits the amount of current that is able to flow; it provides a resistance to the flow. In the same manner my body/mind when it is turned down only limits the amount of “Spirit” that is able to flow, it provides a resistance to the flow.

Rubber band around the finger

As a child I can remember putting a rubber band tightly around a finger. The finger turned a purple color and I started to feel a numbness and tingling in the finger; illness. All I had to do is release the rubber band from around the finger and it quickly returned to normal; wellness. Did I consciously have to control the life process in me to bring wellness to the finger? No, I just had to remove the resistance to the flow. Health and wellness are endogenous (having an internal cause or origin)processes.

How do I turn the body/mind up is the real question?

There are two steps to solving this dilemma.

First, is to turn up the rheostat that I have. After I have done this for a while I will come to a realization that there are many resistances to the flow which I have created (SIN Self-Induced-Nonsense). The greatest resistance is thinking that I am only a body and mind. Other resistances are defining myself as weak, not spiritual, not good with people, etc. etc. etc.

Second, is to build a bigger rheostat. I need to remove the many resistances to the flow which I have created. The initial step is to forgive myself for creating such a small rheostat.

Forgiveness is a Process of Being

As I was forgiving myself I realized that forgiveness is a process of being – Matthew 6:9-15 Let this then be your prayer: Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy. Let your kingdom come. Let your pleasure be done, as in heaven, so on earth.  Give us this day bread for our needs. And make us free of our debts, as we have made those free who are in debt to us. And let us not be put to the test, but keep us safe from the Evil One. For if you let men have forgiveness for their sins, you will have forgiveness from your Father in heaven.  But if you do not let men have forgiveness for their sins, you will not have forgiveness from your Father for your sins. – I also needed to forgive each one of humankind for creating such a small rheostats. This creates a reverence for all human life; mine and others. Once I enter this collectiveness of humankind I also found a reverence for all life; I include all material things as life.

Only I can bring about forgiveness for my SIN Self-Induced-Nonsense “For if you let men have forgiveness for their sins, you will have forgiveness from your Father in heaven.  But if you do not let men have forgiveness for their sins, you will not have forgiveness from your Father for your sins”.

Unfortunately each one of us has our own perceptions of oneself, the world around us, and of “Spirit”; so I can not give any specific advice about how to discover the “Ghost In The Machinery”. What is most important to my life is what I experience within; each one of us has a unique path that only oneself can traverse.

Matthew 6:31-34  Then do not be anxious, saying, What may we eat? Or, what may we drink? Or, what may clothe us?  For after all these things the nations seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you have need of all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Then do not be anxious for tomorrow. For the morrow will be anxious of itself. Sufficient to each day is its own trouble.

righteousness – δικαιοσύνη dikaiosunē dik-ah-yos-oo’-nay From δίκαιος; equity (of character or act)

δίκαιος dikaios dik’-ah-yos ; equitable (in character or act); by implication innocent, holy (absolutely or relatively): – just, meet, right (-eous).

But seek first the kingdom of God and His being equitable (in character or act); by implication innocent, holy (absolutely or relatively): – just, meet, right (-eous), and all these things will be added to you.

The One Thing You Really Need To Know In Life

Life is lived from the within to the without.

My biggest problem is I don’t even know the process of my existence. The energy that drives the process of life in me does not come from the food I eat. That energy is only used to build and keep the physical body running. There is an energy that I call “the ghost in the machinery” that keeps the process of life going in me. The body’s heart beats, lungs breathe, digestion occurs, and much more happens without my conscious intervention. How do I know and begin to understand “the ghost in the machinery”?

First I need to be in a deep meaningful dialog with myself.

I then need to assess what my skills and talents are.

When I know myself well I am ready to start exploring “the ghost in the machinery”.

I start with Genesis 1:1 the first two words:

ראשׁית rê’shîyth ray-sheeth’ the first principal thing

אלהים ‘ĕlôhîym el-o-heem’ the Supreme One

Eloheem is a plural masculine noun used with singular masculine verbs. This is contrary to rules of Hebrew grammar. The plural is used to show majesty, honor, or fullness. One not as a separate entity; but as Complete Collective Consciousness.

Genesis 1:1 Created by the Elohim were the heavens and the earth.
Genesis 1:2 Yet the earth became a chaos and vacant, and darkness was on the surface of the submerged chaos. Yet the spirit of the Elohim is vibrating over the surface of the water.
Genesis 1:3 And saying is the Elohim, “Become light!” And it is becoming light.

Spirit רוּח rûach roo’-akh wind, breath, a region of the sky, mind

Light אור ‘ôr ore illumination; to be or make luminous (be, give, or show light) enlightened, set on fire, shine.

Let enlightenment or illumination become; this is the first action of the Supreme One. This is the same principal that Buddha called enlightenment or illumination.

I see now that all creatures have perfect enlightenment – but they do not know it. Buddha

Imprisoned Splendor

Truth is within ourselves; it takes no rise
From outward things, whate’er you may believe.
There is an inmost center in us all,
Where truth abides in fullness; and around,
Wall upon wall, the gross flesh hems it in,
This perfect, clear perception which is truth.
A baffling and perverting carnal mesh
Binds it, and makes all error: and,

TO KNOW,

Rather consists in opening out a way
Whence the imprisoned splendor may escape,
Than in effecting an entry for a light
Supposed to be without.

– Robert Browning (1812-1889) from Paracelsus

Perception Cleansed

If the doors of perception were cleansed every thing would appear to man as it is, Infinite. For man has closed himself up, till he sees all things thro’ narrow chinks of his cavern.

– William Blake, The Marriage of Heaven and Hell

How do I open out a way Whence the imprisoned splendor may escape?

Exodus 3:13 Now Moses said to the One, Elohim: Behold! When I am coming to the sons of Israel, and I say to them, The Elohim of your fathers sends me to you, then they will say to me, What about His name? What shall I say to them?
Exodus 3:14 Then Elohim spoke to Moses: I shall come to be just as I am coming to be. And He said: Thus shall you say to the sons of Israel, I-Shall-Come-to-Be has sent me to you.

היה hâyâh haw-yaw’ to exist; that is, be or become, come to pass

I shall come to be just as I am coming to be היה hâyâh haw-yaw’ אשׁר ‘ăsher ash-er’ היה hâyâh haw-yaw’ a lot of translations read I AM that I AM.

The Hebrews repeated a word to make it superlative. Like Isa 26:3 You will keep in perfect peace the mind stayed on You, for he trusts in You. שׁלום shâlôm shaw-lome’ meaning peace is repeated to mean perfect peace.

“I AM Being that is Becoming” is the very essence that the Supreme One placed within me. As I allow enlightenment or illumination to flow from within me to the without I also experience “I AM Being that is Becoming”.

THE TRUTH WILL MAKE YOU FREE

John 8:32 “and you will come to know the Truth (Reality) by intimate experience, and the Truth (Reality) will liberate and make (set) you free!”

What is this truth?

I am an essence from the Supreme One which inhabits a physical body at the center of my being .

What is the nature of this freedom?

A lot of times I want to experience freedom “from” something. That is not the nature of this freedom.

This is the freedom “to be” whatever the Supreme One places in me. That essence or pattern of energy is my real identity. This is what I need to open up to. There were a lot of times in my life that I tried to pattern my life after someone else’s life; it never felt right trying to live someone else’s identity. The only way that my life can be fulfilled is by living the pattern of energy at the center of my being; using my unique skills and talents.

Opening up to my real identity means setting aside the physical body and mind; emptying myself of all my physical cares, and contemplating the wonder of “the ghost in the machinery”.

Luke 17:21 Neither will they say, Behold, it is here! or, behold, it is there! for behold, the kingdom of Elohim is within/among you.

This is a very interesting verse because it is using the singular and plural “you”; to tell me that the kingdom of Elohim is within/among you collectively. This means that “the ghost in the machinery” is a collective process; I like to call it Complete Collective Consciousness.

As I now contemplate the wonder of “the ghost in the machinery” I have to consider the lilies of the field and the birds of the air. This is not just about me! I have to open up to everything!

Genesis 1:2-3 is the perfect visualization for contemplating “the ghost in the machinery” I must travel to “a chaos and vacant, and darkness was on the surface of the submerged chaos”. I must join as “the spirit of the Elohim is vibrating over the surface of the water”. Then Elohim will say “Become light!” and I am becoming light.
